F/O Richard Hugh Anthony ‘Dickie’ Lee flew with No 85 Squadron and was responsible for the first enemy aircraft to be shot down by the Squadron. He was Lord Trenchard’s godson and was sadly lost while on patrol on the 18th August 1940. Last seen chasing three Bf 109’s off the east coast in his Hurricane MK I (2923). He was aged just 23 years. The various stories told about Dickie Lee inspired me to paint this portrait, one in particular was of him flying his Hurricane inverted along the grass runway at Debden to impress the gathering spectators. When he landed, the ground crew removed grass from his arial antena which showed just how low he had been flying. A great character who's loss had a big impact on the squadron.
