This artifact is a piston liner from the Rolls Royce Merlin engine of Spitfire R4170, flown by FL Bobby Oxspring, 66 Squadron, Gravensend. On the 25th October 1940, Bobby Oxspring engaged ME109's in the Maidstone area, with his aircraft damaged and unflyable, he bailed out over Langton Green near Tunbridge Wells. I recovered these items in November 1974 and contacted Bobby Oxspring, who later sent me information about the incident, which you can read in details in the Tribute to the Few section.
